5 Wood Distance — How Far Should You Hit a 5 Wood?

5 Wood Distance from Tell Me More Golf Coaches Giving You the Average 5 Wood Chart Data

As the head golf instructor at Tell Me More Golf, I’ve received many questions regarding fairway wood distances, and especially the popular 5 wood. This, along with many more valuable insights, will be covered in this article.

How Far Does the Average Person Hit a 5 Wood?

The male average golfer hits a 5 wood around 195 yards. This number is slightly lower for females, at an average of 160 yards. The 5 wood is a low-lofted golf club, which means that the distance disparity between different types of golfers is very large.

Because the 5 wood has a low loft, the distance differences between golfers are vast. This can be seen in this distance chart, where you can see how far the average woman, male beginner, average man, advanced man, and professional golfer hits a 5 wood.

It’s important to note that these numbers are rough averages, and how far you will hit your 5 wood depends on many factors.

That’s why you should never over-compare yourself, and instead focus on improving for the benefit of your own golf game.

5 Wood Average Club Head Speed

When it comes to male golfers, the average clubhead speed when hitting a 5 wood is around 85 mph. However, as with all golf clubs and fairway woods in particular, the swing speed differences between golfers are very large.

For example, golfers on the PGA Tour swing a 5 wood over 105 mph on average, which is very fast.

Standard 5 Wood Length

The standard 5 wood length is approximately 42 inches.

Tips on Hitting a 5 Wood for Distance

Two main factors impact how far you hit any golf club: swing speed and smash factor. So to hit your 5 wood the longest way possible, you should focus on improving the quality of your strike and increasing your clubhead speed.

This is definitely easier said than done. To strike your 5 wood the best, it’s crucial to hit down on the golf ball and let the loft do its work.

However, it’s also essential not to be too steep in the downswing, as that will lead to inconsistent shots.

The best way to increase clubhead speed is to improve the fundamentals of your golf swing and to do speed training with your clubs or speed training equipment.

Using a 5 Wood

Ah, the trusty 5 wood – a golfer’s faithful ally in numerous situations on the course.

Primarily, it shines in tee shots, especially on shorter par 4s or par 5s, and can be a game-changer on those lengthy par 3s. Also, let’s not overlook its prowess for approach shots on the longer holes. In short, when precision and distance are your game, the 5 wood is your go-to club.

5 Wood Loft Degrees

The typical 5 wood loft is between 18 and 22 degrees. This makes the 5 wood one of the lowest lofted golf clubs, and creates a relatively low ball flight with a limited spin rate. The fairway wood design tries to compensate for this by offering a higher launch and spin than an iron, which makes it more forgiving

TellMeMoreGolf.com – Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 5 wood equivalent to?

A 5 wood has between 18 and 22 degrees of loft, making it a suitable replacement for a 3 or 4 iron.

What is a 5 wood good for?

The 5 wood is primarily great for tee shots when you can tee up the golf ball. Without a tee, making solid contact is challenging for many amateurs. A 5 wood can also be used for approach shots on longer holes when you’re looking to make a green-in-regulation.

Do I need a 5 wood?

Whether you need a 5 wood or not depends on many factors, including what the rest of your golf bag looks like. For example, if you hit your 3 wood 200 yards and your 4 iron 190 yards, there’s likely no reason for you to get a 5 wood. However, if you have a yardage gap or want alternatives on the golf course, a 5 wood can be an excellent investment

Is a 5 wood more forgiving?

All fairway woods are reasonably challenging to hit if you struggle with striking the golf ball well. But with that said, a 5 wood is definitely more forgiving than a 3 wood or 3 iron. This is because of the higher loft and more forgiving fairway wood design.

Conclusion:

The 5 wood goes very different distances for different golfers, as the loft is so low. Average male golfers hit their 5 wood around 195 yards, and females hit theirs around 160 yards. However, as with all golf club distances, the results you will see are highly personal.
