Titleist AVX vs Pro V1 — (Golf Instructor’s Advice)

These golf balls may have a lot in common at first glance, but they differ in some fundamental ways, such as the Pro V1 having a compression rating of 90 while the AVX sits around 80.

After reading this article, you’ll know which golf ball suits you the best based on your golf game. 

Titleist AVX vs Pro V1 Compared

When comparing golf balls, there are three main areas that are interesting to look at: the design, spin, and price. 

Design

The Titleist AVX and Pro V1 both feature premium Urethane cover materials, which provide a soft and pleasant feel. They slightly differ in their dimple design, with the AVX having 348 dimples while the Pro V1 has 388. The biggest design difference is in the core, where the AVX has a significantly larger one which provides a softer feel. 

Spin

The AVX is meant to be a low-spinning alternative to the Pro V1, and it is just that. With the AVX, you can expect lower spin throughout all golf clubs and shots. 

Price

Both the AVX and the Pro V1 are premium golf balls with premium price tags. They usually cost about the same at around $55 per dozen. This price puts them in the same category as the best golf balls from other major brands like Callaway, TaylorMade, and Srixon. 

Titleist AVX Benefits and Cons

The benefits of the AVX golf ball are the lower spin and softer feel, which suits some golfers very well.

The biggest con of the AVX is definitely the lower spin when hitting into greens. On the golf course, there are many places where the most spin possible is the best for your short game. This includes approach shots from the fairway and greenside chips. That’s why a higher spinning ball can be better. 

There can also be other drawbacks with the AVX golf ball if your swing doesn’t suit it. If you have really high speed, this ball is too soft, which will cost you distance. If you have trouble launching the golf ball and keeping it airborne, the spin is also too low.

Titleist AVX Compression

The Titleist AVX golf ball has a compression rating of 80, meaning it has a lower compression than the Pro V1, which makes it softer.

Titleist AVX Distance

For many amateur golfers, the AVX will be very long-hitting off the tee. This is thanks to the low spin combined with a relatively low compression. However, if you have fast ball speed, the Pro V1 will most likely go longer. 

Suitable Handicap for the Titleist AVX

The AVX golf ball is tricky when it comes to determining a suitable handicap, as it’s a pretty niched golf ball. However, it’s safe to say that it’s generally for the mid-to-low handicaps because of the low spin and relatively high compression.

Suitable Swing Speeds for the Titleist AVX

With a compression rating of 80, the Titleist AVX is not a high or low-compression golf ball. We’d say that this ball suits swing speeds over 90 mph, as speeds lower than that might struggle with the lower spin.

Pro V1 Benefits and Cons

The best part of the Pro V1 is the overall fantastic performance. The high spin rates are excellent, and the feel is outstanding.

The only negative about the Pro V1, except for the high price, is the mid-level spin off the tee, which doesn’t enable fast golfers to hit it as far as possible. The compression is also on the higher side, which doesn’t suit slow speeds. 

Pro V1 Compression

The Pro V1 from Titleist has a higher compression than the AVX at 90. This means that it classifies as a high-compression golf ball. While it feels pretty soft thanks to the Urethane cover, it’s actually quite hard. 

Pro V1 Distance

The Pro V1 is undoubtedly a long-hitting golf ball, but the spin rates are relatively high off the tee, which isn’t ideal for distance since the ball carries shorter and rolls less.

The AVX is an example of a potentially longer golf ball, as the spin is lower, but it also comes down to your swing speed and ball flight. 

Suitable Handicap for the Titleist Pro V1

The Titleist Pro V1 is a golf ball that mainly suits the lower handicaps. This is because of the high compression combined with the high price.   

Suitable Swing Speeds for the Titleist Pro V1

For the Pro V1, we’d say that a golfer should have a swing speed over 95 mph, as it’s a high-compression golf ball. This makes it relatively hard, despite feeling pleasant, which means that slow swing speeds won’t see the best performance with it.
