Country Club Casual Attire and Dress Code for Women Men from Tell Me More Golf Instructors

I’m the head golf instructor at Tell Me More Golf, and in this article, I will cover the basics of country club casual attire and the dress codes you need to keep in mind.

Country clubs are a great way to enjoy a fine venue, excellent golf, and find many future friends. The dress codes can be a little confusing though, which is why we’ve put together this article.

What Is Country Club Casual Attire?

Country club casual attire is defined as a relaxed yet sophisticated style, moving away from strict dress codes.

Country club casual attire is more relaxed than dressing formally, focusing on refined, sophisticated, and trendy outfits.

Collared shirts and modest dresses are common.

Always check specific club dress codes, as they vary. This timeless style emphasizes simplicity and appropriateness for various settings, including indoor and outdoor occasions.

What to Wear at a Country Club? The Basics

Dress codes differ between country clubs, but there are some basics that you should know. However, you should always check with the club you’re going to. What you should wear can also depend on the activity you’re performing.

Country Club Golfing Attire

When you’re playing golf at a country club, you’re almost always required to wear a collared shirt. Polo shirts are usually what you’ll find, and that goes for both men and women. You should also use proper golf shoes, and most courses require soft spikes to protect the greens.

For pants, some clubs don’t allow shorts, but you’re always safe with a pair of well-fitting khakis or similar pants. Denim is never allowed on the course, but sometimes in the clubhouse.

General Country Club Attire

When hanging out at the country club, such as eating, lounging, and so on, it’s crucial that your clothing is clean and neat. Here, country club casual is often the dress code, which you can read about later in the article.

Country Club Special Occasion and Dining Attire

On special occasions and when dining at the country club, a formal dress code is often used. During these events, men often wear a jacket, such as a sport coat or blazer, and tucked-in collared shirts are a must. Dress shoes are a must for both men and women.

Country Club Casual Attire for Women

Generally speaking, women have a little more freedom when dressing for the country club. What you should wear here mainly comes down to well-fitting and “traditional”, usually according to each country club’s dress code.

Country Club Casual Tops

For the tops, a collared shirt or a classic sweater often works great for women. A casual blouse can also be great, but things like a halter top are generally frowned upon

Country Club Casual Bottoms

Women can usually wear shorts, skirts, or pants when the dress code is country club casual. However, a tailored look is often preferred.

Country Club Casual Shoes

Dress shoes are not necessary for women when it comes to country club casual. Instead, you can wear classic sandals or flats, or low heels if you prefer that

Country Club Casual Attire for Men

Country club casual attire means, simply put, wearing comfortable clothing that still looks put-together. It’s more dressed up than wearing a t-shirt and jeans, but it’s not as formal as what you’d wear to a special occasion country club dinner.

Country Club Casual Tops

For men, country club casual attire means wearing a collared shirt, which at some clubs doesn’t have to be tucked in. A polo is acceptable, but stay away from workout gear

Country Club Casual Bottoms

When it comes to pants, things can be a little confusing for men. Some clubs allow shorts and denim, and some don’t. If you want to be safe, you can’t go wrong with a pair of khakis

Country Club Casual Shoes

When country club casual is the dress code, most men wear loafers, boat shoes, and sometimes dress shoes. If you come from the golf course, a clean-looking pair of golf shoes is often also accepted

Examples of Bad Country Club Attire

Country club dress codes can be very confusing, especially for new members and visitors. Dress codes differ greatly between locations, but here are some examples of bad country club attire you should probably stay away from:

  • Jeans
  • Torn or ripped clothing
  • Dirty clothing
  • Workout wear
  • Tank tops, and often t-shirts as well
  • Hats or caps worn indoors
  • Hooded sweaters
  • Most athletic shoes, with the exception of neat golf shoes

TellMeMoreGolf.com – Frequently Asked Questions

What does country club casual dress mean?

Country club casual dress refers to a neat, put-together style that’s still comfortable and relatively relaxed. It’s definitely a step up from normal casual wear, but it’s not as formal as traditional business or cocktail attire. If you’re not sure what to wear, check the dress code of the country club you’re attending.

What do you wear to a casual country club dinner?

You’d typically wear a collared shirt, full-length pants, and dress shoes at a casual country club dinner. Untucked shirts are sometimes allowed and sometimes not, and denim can be okay if it’s well-fitting and has a discrete design.

There’s a bit of room for going outside the box with your outfits, and it’s not as strict for women. Ladies can wear most things that are tasteful and tailored.

What does country club casual mean for men?

For men, country club casual usually means wearing a collared shirt, khakis or something similar, and loafers or clean sneakers. Dress codes differ between clubs though, and for example, it’s sometimes okay to wear shorts and sometimes it’s not.

Is it OK to wear jeans to a country club?

Generally speaking, you shouldn’t wear jeans at a country club. This is because many country clubs don’t allow any type of denim to be worn. In some cases, such as a country club lunch, a pair of classic blue jeans can be accepted, but if you want to be safe, wear something like a pair of khakis instead.
